Members brainstorm on initiating "second wave" of WTO fisheries subsidies talks
WTO members met at an informal retreat in the French town of Evian-les-Bains on 10 October in order to share ideas and think creatively on how to approach the "second wave" of negotiations to further discipline harmful fisheries subsidies. They also underlined the urgent need to appoint a new chair to lead the negotiations.

Members and partner organizations look into future priorities for Aid for Trade
WTO members, international financial institutions and observer organisations discussed the future direction of the Aid for Trade initiative and exchanged information on recent activities at a session of the Committee on Trade and Development on 11 October. A workshop organized by the Committee on 10 October looked at how Aid for Trade can support economic diversification and sustainable development.

Plastics Dialogue advances on ministerial mandate to seek outcomes by MC13
Participants in the Dialogue on Plastics Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade met for their third plenary meeting on 11 October and reported progress on working towards "concrete, effective and pragmatic outcomes" for the WTO's 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) as mandated by their ministers. They also welcomed Mexico, Samoa and Mauritius as new co-sponsors of the initiative.

Group on small business discusses implementation of 2020 recommendations, future work
At a meeting of the Informal Working Group on Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), held on 12 October, WTO members reflected on how they can advance their work on helping small businesses better engage in international trade. Members also reviewed the implementation of the December 2020 package of recommendations.

WHO, WIPO, WTO to hold workshop on innovation and access to COVID-19 diagnostics
The World Health Organization (WHO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the WTO will hold on 28 October a joint virtual workshop on "Innovation and access to diagnostics for COVID-19 and beyond". The event will be the third in the series of trilateral workshops which the Directors-General of the WHO, WIPO and the WTO have agreed to organize within the existing collaboration framework.

DDG González: "More cooperation on digital will create trade opportunities, reduce costs"
It has become increasingly clear that the absence of global approaches to digital trade is leading to uncertainty and higher costs for businesses and consumers, DDG González said at a roundtable organized by the Business Council for International Understanding and Google on 12 October. She called for more international cooperation to ensure that digitalization creates new trade opportunities, reduces costs and makes trade processes faster and easier for the benefit of all countries.

WTO, IFC launch joint publication on trade finance in West Africa
A joint publication on "Trade Finance in West Africa" was launched by Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and International Finance Corporation (IFC) Managing Director Makhtar Diop on 12 October in Washington DC. Using the results of a survey of banks in the four largest economies of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) — Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal — the publication assesses the shortfall in trade finance in these countries. It also outlines ways of removing obstacles to credit facilities and of unleashing the trade potential of the region.
