Members affirm environment committee's importance at end of Trade and Environment Week
At a meeting of the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) on 21 October 2022, members underscored the importance of transparency and cooperation to prevent trade frictions and the need to harness trade policies to protect the planet. At the meeting, which was held at the end of WTO Trade and Environment Week 2022, members also discussed ways to move forward with work on sustainability issues in the wake of the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) held in June.

Members review safeguard actions on 19 products at committee meeting
At the biannual meeting of the Committee on Safeguards on 24 October, WTO members reviewed safeguard actions taken by fellow members with regard to 19 investigations. While the number of new initiations of investigations and applications of new measures have decreased, several members reiterated their general concern regarding the way this instrument was used.

WTO, Caribbean Development Bank strengthen efforts to help small businesses trade globally
The WTO and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) signed today (25 October) a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation between the two organizations, with the aim of improving the capacity of key WTO members to benefit from international trade. The MoU was signed by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and CDB President Dr Gene Leon.

WTO issues new edition of Trade Profiles
The WTO issued today (26 October) the latest edition of Trade Profiles, an annual publication providing key data on merchandise trade and trade in commercial services for 197 economies. Each profile displays a sectoral breakdown of the economy's exports and imports, its main trading partners and its most traded products and services.

DDG Ellard calls for more strategic multilateralism to address problems of global commons

France gives EUR 50,000 to boost safe food exports from developing countries
France is contributing EUR 50,000 (approximately CHF 49,000) for 2022 to the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) to help developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) meet international food safety, animal and plant health standards for trade and improve their access to global and regional markets. The contribution adds to the EUR 400,000 already committed to the STDF by France's Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty.
